If you are not in the habit of reading, you won’t find it interesting to read your insurance policy, especially when it is full of Shakespeare English; it may be boring.
Some months ago, I was approached by a friend assisting a client with a claim from an insurer. He wanted to know how to petition the proposed claims settlement that had been presented to his client for a motor own damage loss. I requested a copy of the policy covering the insurance contract. After perusing the policy, I observed that the justification the insurer had passed in the claims settlement was not found in the policy. So I asked my friend to write to the insurer stating the facts and requesting the insurer to show where their basis can be found in the policy.
Guess what? The following response from the insurer was to admit the claim in full. It was that simple.
Your insurance policy does not cover everything. Just so you know- adjustments exist, so do check the policy before you fight your insurer. For example, if you didn’t know about the deductible on your policy and only realised it in the event of a claim, you don’t have to fight but plead.
Reading your policy will help you know what is hidden, so there are no surprises at the time of a claim. I think using an insurance broker may be helpful.
Let’s get insured today but read your policy!
